A Chartbook on the Characteristics and Needs of Frontier Critical Access Hospitals A Chartbook on the Characteristics and Needs of Frontier Critical Access Hospitals

Abstract

This chartbook presents findings from a national survey of frontier Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs), focusing on operational challenges, service availability, and access to care in frontier settings. The analysis is based on primary data collected from CAHs and is complemented by secondary data sources to provide additional context.

Survey results identify consistent themes across frontier hospitals, including workforce shortages, limited access to services, and challenges related to distance and travel for patients. These findings reflect the realities of delivering care in low-population, geographically isolated areas.

To provide context, the chartbook also includes analyses of county-level population characteristics and selected financial indicators. These data help illustrate the broader environments in which frontier CAHs operate.

Overall, findings highlight the challenges of maintaining access to care in frontier communities and reinforce the importance of targeted support through programs such as the Flex Program.
