This project described the community benefit activities of CAHs and their roles as safety net providers using their IRS Form 990, Schedule H submissions. It also assessed the safety net strategies adopted by CAHs to address the needs of underserved and vulnerable populations, recommended policies and/or other strategies to support CAHs in serving the unmet health care and safety needs of their communities, and identified and assessed potential performance measures related to the safety net role of CAHs and other rural hospitals. Non-profit (501c3) hospitals, including CAHs, are required to complete schedule H of IRS Form 990 to quantify the dollar value of their community benefit activities.
