This project will investigate the relationship between quality and finance in Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs). Utilizing established benchmarks to categorize CAHs into four groups: 1) Strong Quality and Strong Finance; 2) Strong Quality and Low Finance; 3) Low Quality and Strong Finance; 4) Low Quality and Low Finance. Once categorized, each group's characteristics will be assessed to understand any correlation between quality and financial performance among CAHs. Based on the findings, interviews will be conducted with CAHs excelling in both areas (Strong Quality and Finance) to investigate specific processes and practices in quality and financial/operational improvement that these CAHs have implemented; and any strategies related to connecting quality and finance in their facility.
