This study responds to concerns over the number of Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) that are financially vulnerable due to low patient census/volume levels by identifying and examining “best practice” turnaround strategies for improving CAH financial performance. The study focuses on CAHs that have effectively turned around their financial positions by improving operational, clinical, and quality performance; implementing services to better meet community needs; and reducing inappropriate bypasses of the hospital.
